Hello everyone, this is Nourah Feteih. I am a Saudi woman from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and I would like to share with you the journey of my life as a single mother. Although I’ve been blessed to live with my family, I have had to make many decisions solely for my child, which has sometimes been a challenge. I got divorced when I was twenty-two years old, after having given birth to a beautiful boy. At the time, I was very fragile from my painful breakup, due to the hurt I felt. I never expected to be a woman who could raise her son without the emotional support of his father. Before my marriage, I had not been exposed to life except from within my community and inner circle of family and friends. So, while I had the unlimited support of my family and lived with them with my son, I still was not sure if I could do this!!
I asked myself: can I be a mother and raise this little human being who came into the world, who has a plan made for him, just as each one of us comes to earth with their own map and purpose in life? I wondered: can I both do this and finish my education on a high level? Can I develop him into the best version of himself that he could ever be? I tried my best to unfold the map in his life through guiding and loving him to be the best person he could ever become. Was I scared? More than ever! But with the unlimited support of my family, I was able to overcome this fear. My father, mother and siblings all gave me motivation through believing in me, that yes – I could do it, and all would be okay. That truly gave me strength.
After being a stay-at-home mother with my son for two years, I re-applied to go back to university with a fresh start. I changed my major from Biochemistry to Early Childhood Education (ECE) at Effat University in Jeddah. Being a part time student and a mother made me feel very empowered and challenged, which motivated me to proceed further and further. Moreover, it actually revealed a new person to me: the Nourah who has a lot of love to give and a lot of creativity!
Being a single mother changed me to become more patient as a person. I became a much better listener to this little person. When he spoke, I had to look in his eyes and give him my undivided attention. Moreover, I would lower myself to his height to allow him to express his wants and needs freely with no intimidation whatsoever, because children can feel frightened and overwhelmed, looking up at adults while they are so small and fragile. Being a single mother pushed my limits and empowered me to realize that I can do this!! However, it did not stop there!
When I became a mother, I made a promise to my son that day: that I would make the highest effort I could to unfold the greatness God has created within him: to help him reach and aspire to his utmost potential in life. I promised to protect him as a little child and give him the strong foundation of love, care and awareness to grow up in becoming the strong, kind, intelligent young man he is today!
Being a parent is truly a luxury that I thank God for every day of my life, for having this amazing opportunity and pleasure to raise such a wonderful, exceptional human being – discovering a human being who is a part of you. This little person came into my life when I thought all was shattered and lost. Little did I know then, that this was just the beginning of the silver lining. In addition, it was the best thing that has ever happened to me: the turning point that changed my life forever. People asked me once, if I could choose to go back and go through the same experience again of a breakup, would I? My answer was: Yes, absolutely!! In a heartbeat, because it made me the woman I am today. It granted me a gift in my life whom I proudly call my son!
Being a single mother allowed me to rediscover myself. For example, when my son was four years old, we spent a summer vacation in Vancouver, Canada with my family and my brother’s family. I took him to the park to play, and there was a huge, tall rope pyramid he was eager to try. I gave him a boost to reach the first level, according to his height and age, and thought it would make him content. On the contrary, within a few minutes he climbed to the top of the pyramid, which made me very worried from any accidents that might happen! He called out, feeling so proud of his accomplishment: “Mama, I’m at the top of the world!”
Looking at this little child who had no fear and totally believed in what he was doing made me believe that we can do anything in life! Observing the innocence and purity in my son allowed me to see the beauty in the world again. I saw happiness and acceptance for all that is good and true. I felt needed and unconditional love from him, which was truly remarkable. As a mother and an educator, I have seen in children only positivity, no fear: everything is possible. The word ‘impossible’ has not been registered in their minds. To them, the sky was not the limit – it was much more than that! They taught me that you are able to achieve what you want. Having a positive mindset allows you to reach infinite possibilities, and creates a tremendous breakthrough over any obstacles.
As my son grew older, I explained to him that we are a team, and that I cannot do things without his cooperation. This gave him a sense of confidence, responsibility, decision-making and the feeling that he is very much loved and accepted for purely being: ‘himself’! Raising my son while studying early childhood education allowed me to show him different techniques I had learned in school. It helped broaden his mind and stretched his way of thinking, teaching him to think out of the box rather than having a piped vision. It was magnificent and fascinating to see him bloom and grow. Furthermore, witnessing his captivation and excitement when learning new things, his eyes widening when something new was introduced, made me motivated to give him more love and care than ever. It gave me confidence and inspiration as a person, and an incredible rush of emotions I had never experienced before!! I felt so much empowerment! I got such a tremendous boost of energy that, at one point in my life, this intensity of speed made me come to believe that the speed of lightning and I were racing until we actually united and became one!! A quantum leap experience!! A discovery of oneself that I cannot begin to describe to you, no matter how much I try!
Seeing your child blossom and learn in front of you, seeing that they actually do see the world for its endless possibilities, that they see light and beauty in everything, was truly inspiring! Being a mother allowed me to reexperience myself. For example, when I used to sing to him, he would look at me with amazement and say: “Mom, you have the best voice in the world!” This was a talent I never knew I had before I had him. When he was five years old, I had three white hairs. He looked mesmerized and said to me: “Mama, you have silver hair!” Children see the true beauty in everything, which is an absolute miracle.
My son would paint each finger a different color, looking at it with fascination and happiness. This made him more creative and led him today to create his own art exhibition as a senior student in 2019, before the ‘Coronology’ era. It was a demonstration which was a great success, filled with creativity and high imagination. He named it ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’ in reference to the story of Alice in Wonderland, where she goes down the rabbit hole and sees different things from a different perspective. At his art gallery, you would perceive the paintings, and then the light would switch off and a black light would turn on, to see a different painting appear before you. It was exquisite and absolutely brilliant!
Last but not least, to all mothers out there, whether co-parenting with their husbands or single mothers. You can do it! You are able to do anything and everything you dream of in life, and be a great mother at the same time. Women, you are truly invincible, to say the least. We are mothers, sisters, wives, daughters and granddaughters. Roles given to us by God. Kindly remember that what you believe and see, your child will too, as they see the beautiful world through your eyes! Also remember that “without suffering, there would be no compassion.” Accept the bad so it will be released forever, to welcome the good. This will allow you to have a huge leap of positivity and great change in your life and future to come, filled with happiness and infinite possibilities! I strongly believe that the most honorable role of all is being a mother, for it is the most rewarding role in the world. It shows you who you really are and what you are capable of. Your true colors are unfolded through rearing your child, which is truly a miracle! It heals all wounds, for it has healed me!!
Thank you!
